Observers say that the community interaction, coupled with the skills practiced on the farm, help residents regain their independence after they leave CooperRiis.
Lisbeth and Don Cooper founded the facility eight years ago as an alternative to the mainstream mental health system.
Apart from group and individual psychiatric sessions, patients at CooperRiis learn from staff members like Brittany Dean, a life-skills manager in the animal program, how to work on the farm.
