IGNITE ASHEVILLE

The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, Asheville-Buncombe County Economic Development Coalition and a core team of community businesses and volunteers bring Ignite Asheville to the area on Tuesday, February 21st. The open to the public, ticketed event- will be held at The Grey Eagle in the River Arts District.

An event held globally, the Ignite event format follows five minute speaking segments where selected participants present their ideas and personal or professional passions, accompanied by a slideshow of 20 slides which automatically advance every 15 seconds. The aim is to inspire thinking, ideas, conversation and action about varying subject matter.

Similar to Pecha Kucha, a Japanese originated format that features 20 slides displayed for 20 seconds each, the presentation is also widely referred to as “lightning talks.” Originating in Seattle, Washington (2006), Ignite was the creation of Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis in conjunction with O’Reilly Media and MAKE magazine. Since its inception, it has become a speaking phenomenon with over 50 events held annually across various international cities.

“Events such as Ignite are essential for generating ideas and creative synergy among the community,” said Pam Lewis, Director of Entrepreneurship for The Economic Development Coalition and The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber and EDC has embraced this notion and we are thankful for the tremendous support from area businesses, and the energy and time from volunteers to make this first event possible. We hope this is just the first of many.”
