Sunday Afternoon Golf
I love having an office right in the middle of downtown Asheville. For a few minutes, the grinding monotony of working on a Sunday afternoon (ahh, deadlines) was broken by some noise outside my window.
I heard the sound of a crowd talking. So stick my head out, and there are about 150 people standing outside, with Patton Avenue blocked off. They had set up a disc golf hole at the intersection of Patton and Lexington; the “golfers” were farther west, near the Wachovia bank; and the gallery of onlookers lined the sidewalk. How many other cities would let people close down a city street just so that four Frisbee golfers could play through?
Anyway, I don’t know if our street is a par three or four, but it was a great site nonetheless. As the golfers in green jerseys walked closer to the chain net to show off their putting game, one of the organizers yelled “(such and such company) just called in a donation of $100!” The announcement was met with a golf clap that would make Augusta jealous.
Anyway, now I know that what I was watching is the Urban Skins game, part of the Mountain Sports Festival. http://www.wncdiscgolf.com/mountain_sports.html When I find out who they were raising money for, I’ll add that below in the comments.
