Get Well Soon, Mamie
Small miracles or big ones, I’m be happy with either.
Last month, our managing editor Rita Larkin was confronted with some sad, sobering news. The night prior, MaimyEtta Black Fine Arts Museum and Historical Society in Rutherfordton had burned. You might recall the museum from an article we wrote about it and its wonderful proprietor, Mamie Gumbs, in our Jan/Feb issue. (You can read more about it here: http://www.wncmagazine.com/feature/wnc_profile/mamie_thompson_gumbs)
Unfortunately, the museum was also Ms. Gumbs’ home, and she suffered severe burns before emergency personnel were able to rescue her. From what we heard through the grapevine, things didn’t look too promising for her to pull through. For weeks, she was in the intensive care unit at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, but we now hear that her condition has been upgraded and she’s been moved to out of the ICU ward and into a regular recovery room.
I look forward to giving you an update on her condition in the near future as she continues a strong recovery.
